No. 5 Bears Cruise Past No. 15 Michigan
Cal Enjoys Wire-To-Wire Victory Over Wolverines
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 5 California women's water polo team had nine different goal-scorers – including one by goalie Talia Fonseca – and defeated No. 15 Michigan 14-10 on Sunday at Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
The Golden Bears (15-3) jumped on the Wolverines immediately, taking a 4-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Fonseca closed out the period with her first career goal.
Cal ultimately extended its lead to 5-0 early in the second quarter before Michigan finally got on the scoreboard. The Bears led 8-4 at halftime.
Cal steadily pulled away in the second half, scoring three of the first four goals in the third quarter. The Bears led 12-6 entering the fourth period.
Cal eventually led 14-8 with 3:52 remaining before the Wolverines scored a pair of late goals to finish off the scoring.
The Bears return home for a three-game homestand to close out the regular season, beginning with a showdown against No. 7 Arizona State on Saturday at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
