WATER POLO / OLYMPIC GAMES “PARIS 2024”

"Sunk" France (11-4) and the Women's National Team qualified for the 8th - With Australia in the quarter-finals

With an outbreak in the last two eight minutes of the crucial match of the last matchday of Group B, our National Women's Water Polo team reached a comfortable victory (its first in the competition) with 11-4 over France and got the ticket for the 8th of the Olympic Games.

With a terrible defense and plural solutions offensively, the team of Alexia Kammenou found its best self, especially from the middle of the game until the final, "sunk" the hosts, reached the goal and took the 4th place in the B' Group and with it qualification to the quarter-finals, where they will face Australia (first in Group A) on Tuesday (6/8).

THE MATCH

In the first four minutes of the match, nervousness and bad choices prevailed, resulting in a zero score in both home teams, with the National team however opening the score with Xenaki at 4:07 from the end of the first eight minutes and Margarita Pleuritou to give the blue and white a two-goal advantage in the next attack. The answer of the French women did not take long to come, since by using the above player twice they reached 2-2 at the start of the second eight-minute period, while Vernou was the one who turned the match around by writing 3-2.

The continuation found the blue and white team blocking the attack for several minutes and even getting to the point of losing a penalty (Raikro defeated Ninou), for Xenaki to come and end the 10-minute offensive attack by making the 3 -3 a few seconds before the end of the second quarter.

The third eight minutes was a completely different affair compared to the first two, with Alexia Kammenou's players playing exemplary defense and allowing the hosts to score just one goal (on a penalty), to find their way back three times on the way to the net within a space of 1.5 minutes with Hydirioti, Myriokephalitaki and Giannopoulou and entering the final stretch of the match with a two-goal advantage (6-4).

In the fourth eight minutes the dominance of our internationals was complete. The final, however, took on a thriller character for the French women, since due to the scoring system they also got the ticket as long as they lost with 8 plus goals difference, which did not happen, with the 11-4 remaining in the final and signing the qualification of Greece.
