Mount St. Mary's Women's Water Polo Remains Perfect in MAAC with Wins Over VMI and Iona
Mount St. Mary's women's water polo team started their 2026 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) home schedule with a 17-11 victory over Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in Emmitsburg on Senior Day. The Mountaineers, now 2-0 in MAAC play, honored seniors Anna Kegel, Natalie Marquiss, and Emily Hatcher during the day’s ceremonies.
Against VMI, Mount St. Mary's came out strong, scoring four unanswered goals to open the match. Lotte Schreurs led the early charge, and Leilani Horan added back-to-back goals, followed by Emily Hatcher. Schreurs completed her first-quarter hat trick, helping the Mount take a 6-3 lead into the first intermission. The team maintained momentum, widening their advantage through the second quarter and finishing the first half ahead 9-6. In the third, Lucia Redaelli and Anna Kegel added goals, while Schreurs continued her scoring streak, finishing the game with an impressive seven goals along with four steals and three drawn exclusions. Kegel, Redaelli, Horan, and Kailee Viers each scored twice, with Hatcher and Kiele Davidson contributing single goals. Goalie Olivia Fernie anchored the Mount defense with 11 saves, two steals, and an assist.
The next day, Mount St. Mary's traveled to Philadelphia to face Iona, securing a 20-13 win and maintaining their perfect record in conference play. The Mount led 5-3 in the first half and remained narrowly ahead, 8-7, at the break. In the second half, their offense erupted for 12 goals while limiting Iona to just six. Anna Kegel had a standout performance, netting six goals, an assist, and a steal. Lotte Schreurs added five goals, an assist, a steal, and two drawn exclusions. Kiele Davidson contributed four goals, while Emily Hatcher and Leilani Horan each scored twice. Lucia Redaelli chipped in a goal and drew an exclusion, while Olivia Fernie made five saves in the cage.
With these victories, Mount St. Mary's improved to a 6-9 overall record and continues as a contender in the MAAC. The Mountaineers will look to extend their winning streak as they complete their Philadelphia trip with a match against Marist.
