Stanford Sweeps MPSF Awards, Pacific and Cal Impress, Princeton and UC Irvine Continue Winning Ways
No. 1 Stanford’s women’s water polo team swept the MPSF weekly awards following a crucial 10-9 road victory over No. 2 UCLA. Jenna Flynn earned her fifth career MPSF weekly honor and her second this season by scoring a hat trick, including the game-winning goal with 3:47 left. She also contributed one assist, one steal, and two earned exclusions, playing a pivotal role in the team’s balanced attack. Lucy Haaland-Ford was named MPSF/S&R Newcomer of the Week, earning her first career honor thanks to her lockdown defense and a key exclusion late in the game. Stanford will next host USC on March 22.
No. 24 Pacific capped a remarkable weekend by defeating No. 17 San Jose State 15-14 in overtime at the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center. Laia Marsinach Ortego led with six goals and three assists, including the overtime game-winner assisted by Eleni Ikonomou. Ella Cowan contributed five assists, while Alicia Petkov netted four goals. Neither team led by more than two goals throughout the tight match. Pacific has now won four out of the last five contests against San Jose State and will return to action against No. 7 LMU on March 14.
No. 4 California rolled past No. 17 San Jose State 22-10 at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Junior Julia Bonaguidi scored five goals, while freshman Despoina Drakatou added four goals, five assists, and two steals. Senior Abbi Magee scored four times, including her 100th career goal, and Feline Voordouw also completed four goals. Cal had 10 different players score in the dominant victory and will next host No. 6 Hawai'i on March 15.
No. 14 Princeton continued its successful spring break trip and sits at 15-2 this season. The Tigers suffered their first loss after a 14-game winning streak against No. 13 Harvard but still boast five ranked victories. The team features six players with at least 20 goals, led by Shanna Davidson and Olivia Krotts. Davidson also leads in steals, blocks, and sprints, while Didi Evans guides the offense with 54 assists and 89 total points. Goalie Lindsey Lucas holds an 11-2 record with a .550 save percentage. Princeton faces Pomona-Pitzer and UCLA before finishing the week at the San Diego State Invitational.
No. 10 UC Irvine secured a 16-10 win over Concordia at Anteater Aquatics Complex. Junior Sara Naulty and sophomore Deirdre Murphy each netted three goals, supported by Pippa Heaver, Lauren Hett, and Chloe Patist, who scored two apiece. UCI established an early lead and pulled away in the final quarter, holding Concordia to just two goals. The Anteaters will take on Cal State Fullerton next for a Big West matchup.
