E.ON Men's National Water Polo League: historic, 27th championship title won by Ferencváros

E.ON Men's National Water Polo League: historic, 27th championship title won by Ferencváros

FTC-Telekom now stands alone at the top of the eternal ranking of men's championships since 1904: the final's third match was the easiest, a 6-0 sprint in the second quarter decided the game by halftime. With this victory, the green-whites secured their 27th gold medal in history, the fourth consecutive one – and this was their 100th unbeaten match in domestic competitions (national league, cup) since 2022.

Although Vasas took the lead with a precise shot by Soma Lakatos, and Fradi missed the first, soon after the green-whites' Soma Vogel started delivering saves. As the red-blues were "building walls" for minutes, the defending champions on the opposite side began scoring. Stylianos Argyropoulos equalized with a great lob, then Vendel Vigvári scored first from an advantage and then from an action, quickly putting FTC ahead 3-1.

The trend was halted by Dániel Dala with a great skip shot against disorganized defense, which was answered by a fantastic lob from Dušan Mandic – he was already descending, but shot with great touch. However, the remaining 23 seconds were enough for the Angyalföld team to get closer, as the home defenders didn't follow Randelovic's drive closely enough, resulting in a score of 4-3 after eight minutes, even though the save ratio was 5-0.

Then came Márton Mizsei's first save, but Mandic, after a successful fake-out, brought the ball to the defenders and executed another fantastic shot. With the more experienced lineup that arrived for this match, the Fradi defenders appeared more solid (older, more muscular, more experienced…), causing the Vasas attacks to fizzle out one after the other – on the other end, first Gergő Fekete, then Argyropoulos easily converted the exclusions.

Slobodan Nikic quickly called a timeout, but it only helped until the next exclusion – it resulted in 2-meter wandering, while Krisztián Manhercz smoothly scored with a simple lob, replacing Mizsei, who had been a strong support in previous matches but couldn't reach the balls this time. However, the arriving world champion teammate Márton Lévai also struggled against the green attackers: Vigvári sneaked between the defenders, took the ball, and smoothly scored; shortly after, Márton Vámos did the same, essentially sealing the fate of the championship: the score was already 6-0 in this game, 10-3 overall, and we hadn't even reached halftime.

Or this match resembled last year's finals: Fradi basically scored at will, holding seven action goals at that point as the defending champions.

The third quarter started with missed advantages on both sides, but Jansik Szilárd managed to score from the post with three defenders on him, then Bogdan Durdic contributed to the game with the next goal in the next six on five situation. To this, Fradi responded with a new figure, Vigvári appeared on the post and scored – the score was 12-4 at that point, and the real question was which team could maintain the level of concentration (and fighting spirit) in a match that everyone knew had already been decided.

Argyropoulos had no trouble adding the next exclusion goal, while Vogel reached Durdic's next rocket, and the quarter concluded with a goal by Márton Vámos, extending the lead to ten (14-4).

It was bad news for the red-blues as Ferencváros did not ease off, neither in attack nor defense, resulting in a continuous flow of goals – on top of that, by this point Vasas had completely fallen apart. After scoring three goals in the first quarter, they managed to add only one in the middle two periods before the fifth came at 17-4.

Fradi reached 20 at 2:31 in the goal fest, while the number of saves stood at 15-4 and action goals at 12-2. Finally, the championship team sprinted to 22 goals, becoming champions for the fourth consecutive time and the sixth time in the last seven seasons.
