Water Polo Takes on Cal State Fullerton to Open Big West Championship

IRVINE, Calif. — The top-seeded University of Hawai'i water polo team begins its Big West title defense against eighth-seeded Cal State Fullerton in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Big West Championship on Friday at the Anteater Aquatics Complex in Irvine, Calif.

The opening sprint is set for 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time (7:00 a.m. Hawai'i Time). The Rainbow Wahine enter the tournament on a 17-game winning streak in Big West matchups (regular season and tournament) dating back to the 2023 season. UH aims to defend its crown and win back-to-back tournament titles for the first time in program history.

OPENING SPRINT
  • UH is 22-6 (.786) all-time in the Big West Championship.
  • UH is on a 17-game winning streak against Big West opponents (regular season and tournament) dating back to last season.
  • The UH-Cal State Fullerton winner will face No. 4-seed UC San Diego or No. 5-seed UC Davis in a semfinal match on Saturday at noon Pacific Time (9 a.m. HT).

  • Bernadette Doyle secured her second Big West Player of the Week honor of the season, and the third of her career, on April 16. Doyle finished a three-match road trip with a team-high eight goals on 51.7% shooting, six assists and seven steals to help the Rainbow Wahine secure the outright Big West regular-season title.
  • UH has claimed the award in four of the last five weeks, and its six awards ties a program record, passing the previous mark of five set set last year.
  • Jordan Wedderburn became the second UH player to earn three Big West Player of the Week awards in a single season. Her four career awards tied the program's individual record.
  • Wedderburn moved into the program's top 10 in career goals with 151 after she posted eight goals in the three-game road stretch to finish the regular-season.
  • Doyle is one assist away from becoming the second player in program history to reach triple digits in goals, assists and steals. She would join Paula Chillida Esforzado, who had 150 goals, 107 assists and 111 steals from 2013-15. Doyle enters the Big West Championship with 122 goals, 99 assists and 118 steals.
  • Ema Vernoux leads the team and ranks third in the league with 69 goals. She enters the Big West Championship with the seventh highest single-season total in program history.
  • Daisy Logtens ranks fourth in the conference with 164 saves (46.7 SV%).
  • Bernadette Doyle leads the team and is fourth in the league with 40 steals, followed by sister Gabrielle Doyle and Logtens with 31 steals.
  • Bernadette Doyle and Camille Radosavljevic lead the team and rank second in the Big West with 12 field blocks.

THE MATCHUP

Cal State Fullerton
  • UH defeated Cal State Fullerton twice this season, including a 19-4 win in the opening round of the Triton Invitational (Jan. 31), and a 14-4 victory in the regular season finale (April 13).
  • UH is 5-0 all-time against Cal State Fullerton, and have outscored the Titans 91-21 in those matchups.
  • The Rainbow Wahine defeated the Titans, 19-6, in last years Big West Championship quarterfinals on April 26, 2024 at the Schaal Aquatic Center in Davis, Calif.
