WATER POLO / OLYMPIC GAMES "PARIS 2024"
For places 5-8 the women's national team lost 9-6 to Australia
Our national Women's Water Polo team fell short against Australia and will be vying for a 5th-8th place at the Paris Olympics. He was defeated in the quarterfinals 9-6 and the day after tomorrow 8/8 will face the loser of the Hungary-USA meeting which will be held later.
Greece La Defense Arena, for long periods played an amazing defense but could not find a goal in the attack. He found himself 0–3 down but equalised, later going down 6–4, but Australia pulled away again 8–4. We're down 8-6 but that's it...
With lost attacks on both sides, excellent Greek defense and a very good Ioanna Stamatopoulou, the big match began. We got to 2:36 when Australia won a penalty and opened the scoring with Alice Williams. In the very next phase, Greece won a penalty but Eleftheriadou's shot hit the post while she was also sent off. However, Stamatopoulou again kept our goal intact as she did a little later in the Gophers' shot. However, the National team, which was doing great defensively, could not find goals offensively, and ended the eight minutes without scoring.
He did it with Maria Myriokephalitaki at 5:17 from the end of the second period, when he was down 3-1. Athena-Dimitra Yiannopoulou added another at 3:31 to make it 3-2 and Elena Xenaki tied it at 3-3 at 2:45: three straight Greek goals in 2.5 minutes and from 0-3, 3-3. At 00:21 and at the end of the attack, Abby Andrews gave her team the lead again for 4-3, halftime score.
We got to 4:27 of the third period for the first goal, Williams' penalty kick to make it 5-3. We went three attacks without scoring, instead Williams made it 6-3 (Australia's run now 3-0). "Guys please, I want composure and persistence in the attack", the words of Alexia Kammenou in the time out she took. Nicole Eleftheriadou made it 6-4 at 00:12, Greece had about 11 minutes to score!
In the final period: Halligan in the above made it 7-4 (7:15) and Williams at 3:16 made it 8-4. Irini Ninou scored for 8-5 at 2:01 from the end and at 1:16 Elena Xenaki scored 8-6, but Alice Williams in the above (00:38) and with her fifth personal goal (9 -6), wrote the end credits.
