The Hungarian national team defeated Greece 16-14 with the 5-meters at the U16 Girls' World Championship in Manisa in the quarter-finals, thereby making it to the top four. Ours led almost throughout the match, but in the last quarter, the Greeks found themselves and saved the match, but we were better able to cope with the battle of nerves.
The first real test came in the quarter-finals for the defending champion Hungarian national team at the U16 Girls' World Championship. Vince Csicsáky's students won their matches with at least a ten-goal margin in the group stage and during the cross-play, but in the top 8 they were no longer waiting for South Africa, Kazakhstan or Thailand, but Greece, and from then on the quarters were eight minutes long.
We started well, because through Adrienn Hetzl we took the lead after a minute and a half, and the advantage was doubled by Kenéz Kincső just a minute later. We defended excellently, forcing the Greeks into a lot of turnovers, who were able to score for the first time after more than five minutes, and it took a bit of luck to do so. At the end of the quarter, Sára Keszthelyi converted a man advantage into a goal, and we ended the first half with a two-goal lead.
At the beginning of the second half, we continued where we left off before the break: great defense (and goalkeeping performance by Horváth from Orsolya) at the back, a superior goal from Kenéz at the front. At the halfway point of the stage, they were able to get closer again with a distant sneak, but with the sensational drop of Laura Nagykereki-Kerekes, we restored the three in between. True, only for a short time, because shortly before half-time the Greeks took advantage of a man advantage, leading 5-3 after 16 minutes. on the other side, Kenéz also sent a falling tree leaf, and although the Greeks were able to score again halfway through the quarter, Emma Kiss responded with a sensational twist. The events started, with the escape of Szalkai Hanga, we went for the first time with four, of which they immediately cut down one, but Zsófi Urbin's hand also burned, and then they also shot one from the edge. We got a man advantage, after the timeout Keszthelyi aimed well from a distance, after which they also sold a goal, and although Kenéz scored for the fourth time in the last second, the referees did not allow it.
What's late doesn't matter - Kenéz might have thought when he was the first to score in the final quarter, but we couldn't sit back even with that. Especially since the Greek national team pulled off a 3-0 series almost out of nowhere, Csicsáky had to ask for time to get his head in order. And this had an immediate result, Barbara Füle greeted us from the wrong side, but they had an answer for that as well. none of them could live with it, the five-meter ones could come.
Alaksza Kinga shot the first one, but they missed it! Keszthelyi didn't make a mistake, nor did the second Greek, but Szalkai's was caught by the Greek goalkeeper. Fortunately, they also hit the next one on the post, Füle hit his with sure hands, just like the Greek who came after him, so the decision was left to Kenéz. And the team captain was able to stay calm, he executed the five-meter perfectly, which ensured the Hungarian victory! made it to the semi-finals, where they will face Croatia on Wednesday from 18:30.
