WATER POLO / GIRLS' WORLD U16, MANISA
Greek national team loses on penalties (16-14 defeat by Hungary) and will claim a place between 5th-8th
Our U15 Girls' National Water Polo team "turned around" a game - against the world champion Hungary - that seemed lost, they claimed on penalties their entry into the semi-finals and the medal zone, but there they "bent", losing 16-14 and will claim a place between 5-8.
The match developed shockingly in Manisa as part of the quarter-final phase of the world championship. Hungary (two years ago they had defeated Greece in the final in Larissa) led 11-7 at the start of the fourth quarter. And yet the girls of Giorgos Tsokas found the mental fortitude, and started the big counterattack: they gradually reduced the score and 1:04 before the end they equalized 12-12 with a goal by Andronikis Karagiannis. The dramatic match went to penalties. There, Bikos-Karagiannis scored, Aphrodite Bitsakou-Krassas missed, Hungary qualified, Greece tomorrow (3/7, 16:30) will play against the Netherlands for places 5-8.
