Harvard University Seeks Aquatics Training & Operations Assistant
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Harvard University seeks an Aquatics Training & Operations Assistant.
Under the direction of the Director of Recreation and Aquatic Operations, this position is responsible for assisting with staff training, facility operations, and program management of Harvard University’s Murr pools at the Malkin Athletic Center (MAC) and Blodgett, and the Murr Center, consistent with the Mission of the Athletics Department. The MAC pool is primarily used for recreational purposes; Blodgett pool is used for recreation, special events, and varsity sports (swimming, diving, and water polo), the Murr is used by recreation for gym access and racquet sports. The Training & Operations Assistant will assist in the selection of lifeguard and monitor staff, conduct training sessions for current staff, teach certification courses, and maintain compliance with all local, state and federal regulations. This position will also assist with lifeguard coverage as needed and assist with events.
Position Description
1. Lifeguard Training
- Plan and deliver in-service training for lifeguards and monitor staff.
- Conduct lifeguard review sessions for staff, as necessary.
- Conduct annual re-certifications for staff and process paperwork according to American Red Cross standards. Track all certifications for staff. Keep records up to date and work with staff to schedule re-certification when necessary.
- Plan, market and teach American Red Cross certification classes for the Harvard and surrounding community. Collaborate with the local American Red Cross to offer the most accurate training programs and keep certification records up to date.
2. Operations Support
- Recruit, interview, tryout and make selection recommendations for new staff. Ensure new staff have up to date skills and certifications. Assist in the recruitment of lifeguards. Assist with hiring process, including completion of new hire paperwork.
- Assist with ensuring all aspects of pool operations meet local, state and federal safety requirements. Work with management team to take immediate corrective action.
- Assist with updating operation manuals for lifeguard and monitor staff. Ensure compliance to written expectations.
- Provide superior customer service to all visitors to the facilities.
- Assist management team with ensuring all policies and procedures are being enforced for staff and patrons. These policies include policies set by Harvard, local boards of health and Harvard’s Environmental Health and Safety office.
- Provide backup coverage for lifeguards and monitors, when necessary.
3. Special Event Support
- Assist with preparation and on-site support for Aquatics events run by Harvard groups and external users (Cambridge Masters, Charles River Diving, Crimson Water Polo, MIAA, Special Olympics, Bay State Games, etc.).
- Assist with set up of event equipment including, meet management equipment, bulkhead placement, and lane line placement.
Basic Qualifications
- At least two years’ experience in Aquatics.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills are required.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel and Outlook, required.
- Proficiency in Meet Manager and Google Calendar strongly preferred.
- Ability to research, learn and utilize additional technology is desirable.
- Must have regular access to a smart phone.
Certificates and Licenses
- Must possess current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification and American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification.
- Certified Pool Operator certification is preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift and move heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.), stand for an extended period of time and work a non-traditional schedule.
Working Conditions
- Evening and weekend work will be required.

Work Format Details
This position is based primarily on-campus, in Massachusetts. This may include in-person during emergency situations (if applicable). Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
