Romanian Water Polo: European Breakthroughs, Superliga Dominance, and Rising Junior Stars

CSM Oradea, the reigning Romanian men's champions, have qualified for the LEN Euro Cup quarterfinals. Coached by Petar Kovacevic, Oradea drew 14-14 away at CN Terrassa in the round of 16 return leg, after a 14–13 home win in the first. Despite leading 14–10 with three minutes left, Oradea saw Terrassa tie the match in the final seconds, but advanced on aggregate. Top scorers for Oradea were Filip Gardasevic (5), Ivan Gusarov (4), and Levente Vancsik (2). The quarterfinals are scheduled for 18 and 28 March 2026. Earlier this season, Oradea exited the Champions League in the group stage.

The Romanian women’s champion, CSM Unirea Alba Iulia, achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Romanian women’s team to reach the Final 8 of the LEN Women’s Conference Cup. After a crucial 8–7 victory over Italy’s ASD Bogliasco and despite a 7–15 loss to Spain’s CN Sant Feliu, Unirea’s results were enough to secure qualification from their group. This achievement marks a new chapter for Romanian women's water polo at the European level.

On the domestic front, CSA Steaua București emphatically cemented its status at the top of the Superliga Națională with a commanding 22–3 win over CS Sportul Studențesc. Steaua dictated the pace from start to finish, demonstrating defensive solidity and offensive power. This victory consolidates Steaua’s leading position heading into the next round.

The race for the Superliga top scorer is intense, with Andrei Neamțu (CSA Steaua) leading at 40 goals, followed by Dumitru Patrick (Politehnica Cluj) with 33 and Sebastian Oltean (CSM Oradea) at 30. The next league match features CSM Oradea versus CSM Mureșul Târgu Mureș on 10 March 2026, broadcast live on the Federation's YouTube channel.

At U12 level, ACS Partizan Tg. Mureș leads the junior league with a perfect record: five wins in five matches, 15 points, and a remarkable 62–21 goal tally. CS Dinamo București holds second (10 points), and CSA Steaua third (7 points). The season showcases the growing strength and determination among Romania’s youngest water polo talents.

Romanian water polo is experiencing a strong season across men's, women's, and junior levels, marked by historic European qualifications, dominant domestic performances, and an encouraging youth scene.
