High School Sports | Boys water polo season starts on Monday, Aug. 12
The CIF Southern Section boys water polo season officially starts Monday, Aug. 12. The first matches in Orange County are scheduled for Tuesday.
One of top matches Tuesday night will be Edison playing host to Canyon. The Comanches finished as the CIF-SS Division 3 runner-up last season while Edison reached the Division 2 playoffs.
JSerra is the reigning CIF-SS Open Division and CIF State Division I champion. The Lions finished 30-0 last season and won their final three games in 2022.
The Lions were led last fall by Ryder Dodd, who recently helped the U.S. men’s team claim the bronze at the Paris Olympics.
JSerra opens its season Aug. 23 at La Jolla.
Newport Harbor, the section and regional runner-up to JSerra last season, will again challenge JSerra for Orange County supremacy.
The Sailors open Saturday morning with Sunset League matches against Marina and Fountain Valley at Estancia High. The Sailors are playing at Estancia because their pool is being refurbished, Newport Harbor athletic director Jerry Murray said.
The first major tournament is the South Coast set for Sept. 12-14. The tournament has been scheduled to be played at Estancia, Corona del Mar, Foothill and Beckman.
The section playoffs start Oct. 29. The finals are Nov. 16.
