WK: TeamNL Waterpolo ladies show resilience against Italy | Waterpolo.nl
The TeamNL Waterpolo ladies have shown resilience at the World Championships in Singapore after the defeat (after penalties) in the quarterfinals against Spain. In the cross-match for the 5th to 8th place, the Dutch team was stronger than Italy with a score of 13-16 (2-6, 4-2, 3-5, 4-3) on Monday. Netherlands will now play against Australia on Wednesday at 14:00 for the 5th/6th place.
The Dutch team started the match against Italy furiously, scoring 3 goals within two minutes through Lieke Rogge (2) and Simone van de Kraats. Although Italy managed to reduce the lead to 2-3, Orange scored three more goals in a row: Noa de Vries, Sabrina van der Sloot, and Marit van der Weijden.
After Italy reduced the gap to 6-8 at half-time, the team of Evangelos Doudesis took control again. Nina ten Broek, Simone van de Kraats, Maartje Keuning, and Marit van der Weijden quickly secured a six-goal lead.
The goals by Cocchiere (7-12) and Bettine (8-12) did not trouble the Dutch team much. However, a concerning moment was when Simone van de Kraats received a red card for a foul while returning after an attack. The penalty shot awarded was converted by Giustini, and the Dutch team had to survive four minutes with one player less.
Despite this setback, the Dutch team showed resilience led by Sabrina van der Sloot. The Orange captain "provoked" her Italian counterpart Bianconi seconds before the end of the third period and scored a long-distance shot to make it 9-13.
But it wasn't over yet. The Dutch team managed to limit the damage to 11-14 while being short-handed in the remaining two minutes, but when both teams were back to full strength, Italy scored through Leone and Bianconi to make it 13-14. Two goals by Maartje Keuning secured the victory for TeamNL Waterpolo ladies. Coach Evangelos Doudesis looks back with satisfaction after the win.
''It was a controlled but sometimes chaotic match. I am pleased with how the girls showed teamwork after the big disappointment of the loss against Spain. We are now focusing on the match for the fifth place,'' he said.
