University of Michigan Adds Alumna Maddie O’Reilly to Women’s Water Polo Coaching Staff
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — University of Michigan water polo head coach Cassie Churnside announced the addition of former Wolverines’ standout Maddie O’Reilly as an assistant coach.
“I’m so excited to add Maddie to our coaching staff,” said Churnside. “Her wealth of high-level playing experience and coaching prowess will be an invaluable addition to our staff and our team.”
After graduating from Michigan in 2022, O’Reilly played professional water polo for two clubs in Europe. With Lille Metropole Club, O’Reilly won the 2022-23 French League Championships and reached the Euro Cup quarterfinals with Greece’s Glyfada Nautical Sports Club.
A native of Villanova, Pa., and a graduate of Episcopal Academy, O’Reilly coached at multiple stops in the summer of 2023, including at Princeton University’s water polo camp in June. At Princeton, O’Reilly guided campers through warmups as well as offensive and defensive drills. O’Reilly also a coached at Episcopal Academy’s Alpha Water Polo Academy where she demonstrated in-game situations and practice drills to high school athletes.
As a student-athlete, O’Reilly shined for the Maize and Blue from 2018-22 by helping the Wolverines claim the 2018 and 2019 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championships. In 136 games, she tallied 194 goals and 151 assists for a total of 345 points. She garnered countless awards at U-M, including 2021 Second Team and 2022 Honorable Mention Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-America distinctions, status as the 2021 team captain and 2021 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Player of the Year laurels. O’Reilly was equally skilled in the classroom, winning the U-M Academic Achievement Award three consecutive years.
