David Martín: "We defend as a team and in addition Unai is having a great tournament"
The defense that brought us success in the last two Olympic cycles has once again become the hallmark of our senior men’s team at the start of 2025. With less than four minutes left in the semifinal, we had the powerful Montenegro held to just 4 goals, thanks to a cohesive team defense and a standout performance by Unai Aguirre. A spectacular goalkeeper who, in the words of head coach David Martín, "is having a great tournament."
Speaking about today's impressive victory (8-15), David Martín commented:
"We’ve taken another step forward to the final. This semifinal was a very good defensive game on our part. We are defending as a team, with support, blocks, and, in addition, Unai (Aguirre) is having a great tournament."
Regarding the final against Hungary on Sunday, he added:
"It’s true that they are the team with the most offensive potential in this championship. We need to stay on the same path, especially staying very focused on defense and taking advantage of our talent in attack, which we certainly have. I’m happy—the team’s progress gets better every day, which was our main goal here in Romania. And, of course, I’m pleased with securing qualification for the World Cup Super Final."
