The loveable larikin was the only water polo player in the Class of 2024 to be elected for induction.

Payne will be honoured at a ceremony in Fort Lauderdale, USA, next year where he will become the first Australiasian player to be inducted.

Chair of the MISHOF and ISHOF Selection Committee, Russell McKinnon, credits Payne as being a true trailblazer of masters water polo.

“Garry has been the driving force of masters water polo in Australia for many years, from the first Australian masters in Perth in 2003 to the current day,” said McKinnon.

“He has toured the world following his favourite sport and it was refereeing where he excelled, gaining FINA international standard and participating as both an athlete and a referee at numerous FINA Masters.

Over a playing career that spans six decades, Payne has competed in seven FINA World Masters Championships where he was a part of two gold and two bronze medal winning teams.

Payne also competed in three Thai Pacific Masters including last year where, after suffering a heart attack 4 years prior, claimed silver in the Men’s 75+ division.

However, McKinnon notes that Payne’s lasting legacy on the sport will be seen outside of the pool.

“Garrys involvement playing and refereeing at every level within Australia, as well as his mentorship and assessing abilities, have seen a host of new officials flow through his hands,” said Mckinnon.

“His administration skills encompass club, state and national appointments, and as a top-level referee for close to 40 years, Gary was a vital clog in National League, National Championships, State and club events around Australia.

“Gary’s immense value to masters water polo in Australia is incalculable.”
