Olympiacos conquered a tough victory against Apollon Smyrnis in the final minutes, 13-14 at the Seraphim Pool
The titleholder Olympiacos faced difficulties towards the end but eventually overcame the resilient Apollon Smyrnis, securing a valuable away victory with a score of 14-13 at the Seraphim Swimming Pool, for the 9th round of the A1 Men's Water Polo Championship on Sunday afternoon (8/12).
Thus, the red and whites of Piraeus maintained their unbeaten record in the championship (8 wins and 1 draw) and continue to enjoy the top spot in the standings of Group B, with 25 points, widening the gap from the second-placed team, now PAOK DOMUS ERGO (with 21). Apollon remained third with 18 points.
The game evolved into a high-level derby. Olympiacos, with a strong defense and versatility in attack, managed to lead at halftime with a score of 8-5 and in the third quarter with 11-6.
However, the "light cavalry" made a strong comeback, and in the fourth period, leveled the score at 12-12, bringing the match to an absolute balance. Nevertheless, Olympiacos, with two consecutive goals by Papaνastasiou, secured a 14-12 lead, and the hosts managed to reduce to a final score of 14-13 with Bogdanović.
The top scorers of the game were Fountoulis for the winning Olympiacos with 4 goals and Bogdanović for Apollon with 5.
