Tournaments – The 14th edition of the "City of Ravenna Trophy" will take place on 7-8 December, in memory of Giorgio Allegri
The appointment with the "City of Ravenna Trophy" tournament, organized by Ravenna Water Polo, is back after the difficult years of Covid, and this year marks its 14th edition. On 7th and 8th December, the Gambi Municipal Pool in Ravenna will host the event, which will be dedicated to the memory of Giorgio Allegri, the former "giallorosso" player who passed away prematurely last August at the age of 26.
Giorgio, who played many seasons in the "giallorosso" team, was the captain of the Ravenna squad not only for his remarkable athletic and technical skills but also for his human qualities on and off the field. A role model for all his teammates, Giorgio was a silent leader who always knew when to make his voice heard.
The tournament consists of a round-robin competition with 4 teams participating: in addition to the home team Ravenna Water Polo, there will be Polisportiva Coop Parma 1964, CooperNuoto Carpi, and CN Persiceto Water Polo, a team coached by Walter Salomoni, who was the coach of Ravenna and Giorgio for many years. The tournament schedule includes two matches on Saturday, 7th December, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and 4 matches on Sunday, 8th December, from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm. The award ceremony and event closure will take place at 5:00 pm in the presence of Giorgio's parents.
The Trophy is organized with the crucial support of BCC – Banca di Credito Cooperativo and Mac Port Ravenna, and is under the patronage of the Municipality of Ravenna.
“Our club had already planned to bring back the City of Ravenna Trophy competition,” commented Ravenna Water Polo President Cesare Bagnari, “It was an event that, before Covid, had become a December tradition in the water polo world and always attracted well-structured teams to Ravenna. Unfortunately, Giorgio passed away this year, and the entire water polo family wanted to dedicate this event to him, which will be a wonderful display of sport and friendship in his memory. I also want to emphasize the support we received from some of our long-time supporters in organizing the event. A huge thank you to BCC and MAC PORT for making all this possible.”
