Created during the Winter of 2019 in cooperation between USA Water Polo, the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) and SCIAC, the championship provides Division III student-athletes the opportunity for a meaningful postseason competition in addition to offering an incentive for other Division III institutions to add the sport on a varsity level.

In 2019 at Whittier College, the host Poets defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges by a 5-3 score for the inaugural Division III Championship with MIT knocking off Johns Hopkins University via a 20-13 score for Third Place.

Following the cancellation of the 2020 event due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the championship returned in 2021 at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges with the host Sagehens managing Claremont-Mudd-Scripps by a 13-12 score for the title.  Johns Hopkins avenged its 2019 Third Place game loss by topping MIT courtesy an 11-10 final score.

At California Lutheran University in 2022, Redlands claimed the programs’ first National Championship in the sport of water polo by defeating the host Kingsmen, 11-6, with MIT claiming the program’s second Third Place finish with a 9-6 victory over Johns Hopkins.

Last year at Augustana College, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps dispatched Redlands, 6-5, to become the fourth team in four championships to claim first place.  MIT added another Third Place finish by upending the host Vikings courtesy an 11-9 final tally.
