Champions League F - SIS Roma Defeated in Athens
WOMEN'S WATER POLO, OLYMPIACOS BEATS (10-3) SIS IN THE THIRD MATCHDAY (PHASE 2) OF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
Heavy defeat (10-3) in Athens for SIS in the third round of Group C in the Champions League. They faced the Greek team Olympiacos, who were at the top of the standings with a perfect record, against SIS Roma, trailing by two points. The level of the match was very high, with both teams having the potential to win. The first two quarters were very balanced (ending in a score of 3-2), with the Romans resisting the attacks from Olympiacos in the first quarter and responding vigorously in the second, especially after Cocchiere's goal which tied the score at 2-2 and boosted the morale of the team.
In the third and fourth quarters, something broke in SIS's defensive schemes and pressure, allowing the Greeks to surge ahead with a 4-0 run that left no chance for the yellow and red team, despite their pride and determination.
Olympiacos deserved the win, even though the final scoreline seems too heavy considering the performance in the pool. SIS will have the opportunity to redeem themselves in the return match.
"We played two quarters on par with a team of great quality – says Marco Capanna – We knew the strength of Olympiacos, and we gave our all. In the third and fourth quarters, the limitations, both as a team and individually, emerged. To be competitive in these types of matches and at this level, we need to work with even more attention. Also, at this moment, we probably experienced a physical decline, giving space and opportunities to the Greek team, and perhaps this was the worst aspect. Now we need to recover energy because the many consecutive away matches are now over. As always, we need balance in our assessments, analysis, and the upcoming work. Nothing is compromised, the season is long, and the team needs to rest after being away for 5 days. I reiterate that we are still in the race in both the Championship and the Champions League, and the many insights gathered in this phase will be useful for improvement."
Next Saturday, November 30, SIS Roma returns to the league and will face Lazio in the first league derby in women's water polo, at 6:30 PM at the Centro Sportivo Le Cupole in Acilia.
