No. 13 Spartans Advance to WCC Championship Match for Second Straight Year
STOCKTON, Calif. - Brendon Gyapjas recorded 14 saves and scored two goals to lead the No. 13 San José State men’s water polo team (17-6, 4-2 WCC) in a 14-10 victory over No. 8 Pepperdine (21-8, 5-1 WCC) in the semifinals of the WCC Tournament. With the win, the Spartans will advance to the WCC Championship match for the second straight season.
- The reigning WCC Champion Spartans have now won five matches in a row.
- Gypajas now has 29 saves and has only allowed 13 goals in the WCC Tournament.
- Gyapjas also earned two goals in the match, scoring for the first time in his career.
- Maro Tiozzo led the Spartans with three goals in the match.
- Tiozzo has tallied 10 goals and 11 assists across his last five matches.
- Mateja Bosić recorded two goals and an assist in the game.
- Bosić leads the Spartans with six goals so far in the WCC Tournament.
- Bence Szabo, Jamie Steingraf and Louis Fehrensen all also tallied two goals and an assist in the match.
- Samu Biros also scored a goal.
- Mitchell Keightley, Erik Duesund and Giancarlo Marquez all assisted in the match.
- The Spartans held Pepperdine to 1-13 on the powerplay.
