The No. 13 Spartans Advance After Storming Past Air Force in the First Round of the WCC Tournament


STOCKTON, Calif. - Brendon Gyapjas recorded 15 saves to lead the No. 13 San José State men’s water polo team (16-6, 4-2 WCC) in a 16-4 victory over Air Force (13-20, 1-5 WCC) in the first round of the WCC Tournament. With the win, the Spartans will advance and play Pepperdine in the tournament semifinals.

  • The reigning WCC Champion Spartans have now won four games in a row.
  • In addition to his 15 saves, Gyapjas only allowed three goals in the game.
  • In the Spartans last two matches, Gyapjas has recorded 25 saves and only allowed five goals in five periods of play.
  • Maro Tiozzo led the Spartans with five points in the match, consisting of a goal and four assists.
  • Tiozzo has tallied seven goals and 11 assists across his last four matches. 
  • Mitchell Keightley and Mateja Bosić each scored four goals in the game.
  • Keightley now has recorded 11 goals and four assists across the Spartans’ four game winning streak.
  • Mattin Sarhaddi and Samu Biros each scored two goals in the match.
  • Eric Ellison also racked up two points with a goal and an assist.
  • Bence Szabo, Giancarlo Marquez, Louis Fehrensen and Erik Duesund all notched a point in the game.
  • This was the second time this season the Spartans held their opponent to under five goals in a game.
