Three Spartans Earn WCC All-Conference Honors
SAN JOSE, Calif. - San José State's Mateja Bosić and Brendon Gyapjas were voted WCC First Team All-Conference and Bence Szabo was voted WCC Second Team All-Conference, announced by the conference on Wednesday.
Bosić led the Spartans in both goals and assists for the second straight season. Bosić tallied 38 goals and 43 assists on the year, contributing a total of 81 points. Bosić also recorded 26 steals and drew 19 exclusions, both good for second most on the team. Bosić was named WCC Player of the Week (Oct. 29) after he led the Spartans to a 3-0 record at the Julian Fraser Memorial and scored the game-winning goal against No. 13 Harvard. This is Bosić’s first time being named WCC First Team All-Conference and second straight season earning All-Conference honors.
Gyapjas led the Spartans in net this season, recording 156 saves and allowing only 112 goals. Just this past weekend against No. 16 Cal Baptist, Gyapjas recorded 17 saves, including the game-clinching save with just seconds left in the match. Gyapjas followed that performance up with 10 saves in just the first half of play against Air Force, also allowing only two goals. This is Gyapjas’ first time being named WCC First Team All-Conference and also his second straight season earning All-Conference honors.
Szabo led the Spartans with 59 exclusions drawn on the season. He also recorded 31 goals, eight assists and eight steals on the year. Szabo led the Spartans in their victory over No. 19 Brown at the Harvard Invitational, recorded six goals and drew eight exclusions in the match. This is Szabo’s first time earning WCC All-Conference honors.
The No. 13 Spartans finished the regular season with a record of 15-6 and conference record of 4-2. SJSU earned the third seed in the WCC Tournament and will face the sixth seed Air Force in the first round on Friday, November 22 at noon in Stockton, Calif.
