England senior men return to action at EU Nations Cup
England’s senior men’s water polo squad return to competitive action this week as they head to Brno, Czechia for the EU Nations Cup.
The 13-man squad have flown out to Czechia’s second largest city for the three-day competition, where they’ll take on international sides from all across Europe.
The competition gets underway on Friday where they’ll play both matches in their three-team group against Denmark (3:20pm UK time) and Portugal (8pm UK time).
The results of those fixtures will then determine their remaining games for the weekend as they look to follow on from Great Britain’s U18s’ impressive seventh place finish in the junior men’s event last month.
A top two finish in the group will see them qualify for the quarter-finals, whilst finishing third will see them compete in the 9-12 place group on Saturday and Sunday.
If you want to watch each of matches you can follow the live stream on the Czech Water Polo YouTube channel whilst all the results from the event will be available here.
‘Putting the building blocks in place’
Ahead of the competition, Swim England Water Polo Programme Lead, Craig Figes – will be out in Czechia supporting the group throughout the weekend – says that this event is an exciting start to this team’s cycle.
He said: “I’m really looking forward to supporting the senior men’s side in Brno for the EU Nations Cup. This event marks the start of their programme and the first of a number of competitions these players will be a part of in the coming months.
“It’s important for this group to gain more experience competing against international opposition as we put the building blocks in place for some of these guys to go on and represent Great Britain and our long-term target of the European Championships in 2026.”
