SUPERCOPA IBERDROLA | Sant Andreu wins the second title in its history against Assolim Mataró (5-10)
Sunny day, calm sea, and a great atmosphere at Joan Serra de Mataró to witness the grand final of the Iberdrola Women's Super Cup. Champions of the Honor Division against champions of the Iberdrola Queen's Cup. Quite a matchup. It was CN Sant Andreu who came out on top with a defensive display (5-10). The first Super Cup for the women's section of Sant Andreu.
The match started with solid defenses and both sisters guarding the goals, Mariona Terré for Mataró and Martina for the team led by Javi Aznar. It took more than four minutes to see the first goal, scored by Elena Ruiz. The response from Ballart's team came with 1:22 left in the quarter through one of the new faces of Assolim Mataró, the New Zealander McDowall. The first eight minutes ended with a 1-1 tie.
The story changed significantly in the second quarter. Aznar's team pressed and scored two consecutive goals through Ari Ruiz and a fantastic long-range goal by Queralt Antón. Assolim Mataró narrowed the gap with a bit of luck, but goals from María Palacio and again Ari Ruiz left Sant Andreu with a three-goal lead at halftime (2-5).
PERFECT THIRD QUARTER FOR SANT ANDREU
The elder Ruiz sister, on fire, scored another goal to make it 2-6 (her third of the morning). Sant Andreu was impenetrable at the back, making blocks and steals all over the pool, with Martina playing at a very high level. Gisel.la Farré extended the lead with the 2-7. A very tough moment for Ballart's team. The third quarter ended with that scoreline.
Queralt Antón scored the 2-8 and practically sealed the title early in the final quarter. Aznar's team's defensive display was spectacular. Martina Clavería scored the third goal for Mataró on a counterattack. Eventually, Mataró managed to slightly improve the scoreline to a final 5-10. The second national title in the history of the CN Sant Andreu women's team after last season's Iberdrola Queen's Cup.
