Cal Hauls In Academic All-District Honors
BERKELEY – Twelve California student-athletes spanning seven varsity sports were named to the 2024 At-Large Academic All-District Teams, College Sports Communicators (CSC) announced Tuesday morning.
The 12 Golden Bears – six men and six women – who earned academic all-district status are as follows:
WOMEN
MEN
A student-athlete must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically with a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average or better, and meet a variety of sport-specific qualifications in order to be nominated for the at-large academic all-district teams. Each NCAA Division I school is allotted six nominations for both the men's and women's at-large academic all-district teams (12 total).
Nine of Cal's 12 honorees – de Bruijne, van Westreenen, Williams, Young-Gomez, Newfeld, Ponferrada, Scales, Shimizu and Smith-Gordon – are now eligible for CSC At-Large Academic All-America status. The CSC will announce the women's and men's All-America teams on July 16 and July 17, respectively.

- Jenna Colligan (beach volleyball): Economics major; 17-5 record for Cal's 2024 NCAA Tournament squad
- Kiki de Bruijne (field hockey): 2024 graduate, psychology; NFHCA Senior Team selection; three-time NFHCA All-West Region honoree; three-time All-America East selection
- Olivia Lee (women's golf): Undeclared major; Cal's lowest scorer at Pac-12 Championships; competed in 10 of 12 events as Bears set numerous program records
- Fien van Westreenen (women's rowing): 2024 graduate, cognitive science; 2024 All-American; All-Pac-12 selection; 2024 CRCA scholar-athlete; recipient of Cal's Oscar & Theodore Geballe Postgraduate Scholarship
- Isabel Williams (women's water polo): Business administration/Entrepreneurship graduate certificates; 2024 Peter J. Cutino Award winner; Pac-12 Tom Hansen Medal winner; Cal's all-time leader in career saves (885) and single-season saves (326)
- Alexandria Young-Gomez (beach volleyball): Media studies major; 2024 AVCA All-American; All-Pac-12 honoree
MEN
- Nik Mirkovic (men's water polo): Economics major; scored 20 goals to help Cal win third straight NCAA title; ACWPC All-Academic, MPSF All-Academic & Pac-12 Honor Roll selection
- Noah Newfeld (men's gymnastics): 2024 graduate, electrical engineering & computer science; 2023 All-American; three-time CGA All-America Scholar-Athlete; finished 12th nationally on parallel bars in 2024; Nissen-Emery Award finalist
- Albert Ponferrada (men's water polo): Data science major; Key starter who scored 38 goals in Cal's run to third straight NCAA title; ACWPC All-American; ACWPC All-Academic, MPSF All-Academic & Pac-12 Honor Roll selection
- Chris Scales (men's gymnastics): 2024 graduate, media studies; three-time CGA All-America Scholar-Athlete; three-time Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll selection; two-time NCAA Final qualifier on rings
- Tyler Shimizu (men's gymnastics): Electrical engineering & computer science major; three-time CGA All-America Scholar-Athlete; 2024 NCAA final qualifier on rings; three-time Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll selection
- Jasper Smith-Gordon (men's gymnastics): Economics major; two-time All-American; 2024 NCAA final qualifier on vault; Cal program record-holder on vault; 2023 CGA All-America Scholar-Athlete; two-time Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll selection
