Men’s Water Polo Falls To No. 4 Pepperdine
MALIBU, Calif. – No. 9 Long Beach State fell on the road at No.4 Pepperdine by a 15-12 margin in an exciting game Saturday afternoon from Malibu, Calif.
Pepperdine (11-1) got on the board first with a goal from Christian Hosea on the first minute of the game. Junior Itai Roth tied the game on an individual play. Hosea scored another goal for Pepperdine and Adam Csapo extended the lead for the Waves, 3-1. Back-to-back goals by Evan Cain and Artur Diaz tied the game in the first quarter, but Pepperdine scored two to close the first up 5-3.
Cain got his second goal of the game to start the second quarter, but a three-goal run would extend the Pepperdine lead to 9-5. Freshman Gabi Acosta got on the board to help the Beach, but Hosea would strike again for the Waves. Another goal by Cain wrapped the second quarter 10-7.
The third quarter started with Cain scoring his fourth of the game. Pepperdine would go again on a three-goal run to extend the lead by four. Acosta scored his second of the game to finish the third quarter with the Beach down 13-9.
The Beach started the fourth quarter with two goals by Diaz to put the game back in reach 13-11. An extra man goal by the Waves allowed them to create a three-goal lead with two minutes left of the match. Freshman Corbin Stanley scored his first of the game to pull the lead back to within two but Pepperdine held off the Beach for a 15-12 win.
Cain lead the Beach in offense with four goals, Artur Diaz recorded his first career hat-trick, while Gabi Acosta scored two on the loss. Bruno Chiappini, Itai Roth and Corbin Stanley all scored one goal in the match.
The Beach is back next weekend at the Gary Troyer Tournament in Claremont, Calif. On Friday they will face Redlands, Whittier, Wagner and No. 20 California Baptist.
