No. 1 UCLA Posts Two Blowout Wins on Saturday
In the first game against LMU, a total of 12 Bruins scored, paced by freshman Ryder Dodd, who scored a season-high six goals on seven shots. He added an assist for a total of seven points and also tallied four steals and drew two exclusions. Redshirt junior Eli Liechty scored a season-high three goals. Sophomores Wade Sherlock and Marcell Szécsi each scored twice for UCLA. Sherlock also added three assists and won both of his sprints against LMU while Szécsi contributed an assist and drew one exclusion.
Super senior Garret Griggs got the start in the cage and played the first half, tallying four saves, two steals, and two assists while giving up four goals. Redshirt freshman Nate Tauscher came on in relief and had two stops, two steals, and an assist, while also allowing four goals.
The Bruins led wire-to-wire, scoring the first three goals of the game. UCLA held a 5-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, and pushed that advantage to 11-4 at halftime. UCLA outscored LMU 6-3 in the third period to take a 17-7 lead into the final stanza. The Bruins won the fourth quarter, 4-1, to provide the 21-8 final.
In the second game against Air Force, a total of 12 Bruins scored, again paced by Ryder Dodd with seven points (five goals on five shots to go with two assists). Redshirt junior Trey Doten tied his career-high of three goals for the third time in his career. Three other Bruins scored multiple goals against the Falcons, which included two each by freshman Bode Brinkema, Szécsi, and redshirt sophomore Vinnie Merk.
Griggs got the start in the cage again, playing the first half, while tallying two saves and allowing three scores. Tauscher came on in relief and had four stops, two steals, and an assist, while allowing seven goals.
The Bruins again led wire-to-wire, scoring the first two goals of the game. UCLA held an 8-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, and pushed that advantage to 14-3 at halftime, winning the second quarter, 6-0. Air Force outscored the Bruins 5-3 in the third period to trim UCLA's lead to 17-8 heading into the final stanza. The Bruins won the fourth quarter, 4-2, to provide the 21-10 final.
Up Next: The Bruins conclude their five-game home stand next week, opening MPSF play with No. 3 Stanford on Saturday, Oct. 5, followed by No. 6 California on Sunday, Oct. 6. Both games are slated to start at 1:00 p.m. PT at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center. Admission is free.
