De Zaan wakes up in the second period after strong start PSV; ''We grew in the match''
PSV visited ZV De Zaan for the first Eredivisie league match of the 2024 - 2025 season. In the match, which was led by referees Pieter Bot and Joop van den Heuvel, the Eindhoven team got off to a strong start. After a 2-4 lead for PSV at the end of the first period, the team from Zaandam recovered and won 16-10. PSV's Wessel Brands (5) and Zaanster Don Rempt (4) were important for the teams with their goals. Period scores; 2-4, 7-5, 12-7, 16-10.
Good start for PSV
After Angelo Corver opened the score for the Supercup winner, Niels van den Hout immediately managed to score the equalizer. PSV, with new coach Hans Willemsen, was more effective in finishing and thanks in part to two goals by Brands and the second goal by Van den Hout, the Eindhoven team started the match in a sovereign manner. De Zaan captain Thomas Lucas saw goalkeeper Pim Steenbrink make an excellent competition debut, although he thought the team did not perform well in the initial phase.
''It was a bit sluggish in the initial phase. PSV was able to keep up the pace well and we missed a number of big chances where they scored from the counter. In the second period, our pace increased and we finished off the chances better. In the second period, we ran out to a 7-3 lead after which we did not get into trouble again. It was a good first competition match that we can build on.''
De Zaan recovers
In the second period, Lucas scored the connecting goal after which Stan Meijn brought his team alongside and equal to PSV with two goals. The home team recovered and scored five times, in the third period De Zaan extended their lead. Team manager at ZV De Zaan, Chris Wehnes, agrees with the captain that the team grew in the match.
''We started far too sloppy and impatient in both attack and defense, which is why we rightly fell behind 2-4.
In the two quarters that followed, we played defensively as we should and offensively we were sharp and scored five times per quarter. Partly because we conceded few goals in the second and third periods, the match was then over and we were able to play out the match calmly. Starting the match like this should never happen, but the way we turned our game and the score around was excellent. We still have plenty of development points to work on.''
On October 5, PSV will play at home against ZPC Amersfoort at 8:00 PM, which won the first competition match 14-11 against ZVL-1886. De Zaan will play an away match against MNC Dordrecht. The standings, all results and the programme can be found via this link.
