No. 6 Cal Defeated In Irvine
IRVINE – Looking for its second win over No. 8 UC Irvine this season on Friday at Anteater Aquatics Complex, the No. 6 California men's water polo team fell short in a 13-5 defeat.
A first-quarter goal by Carter Loth got the Golden Bears (8-4) on the board early, as the sophomore converted a 6-on-5 off a feed from junior Nik Mirkovic. However, Cal trailed 4-1 after the opening period and UCI (5-5) scored the first three goals of the second.
Loth assisted freshman Patrik Kolak on another Bears' strike in the second quarter and William Kelly scored on another power play late in the half. Freshman Maddox Arlett added a goal in the third and redshirt senior Brady Hoover put away his second goal of the season in the fourth. Hoover ended his day with four drawn exclusions to lead all players.
Senior Kai Seed finished with eight saves and a steal in his first complete game at goalkeeper this season.
Cal will remain on the road next weekend for its first two MPSF contests, traveling to face No. 2 USC at 1 p.m. PT Saturday, Oct. 5 before playing at No. 1 UCLA at 1 p.m. the following day.
