Men’s Water Polo Hosts Air Force On Friday Night; Visits No. 4 Pepperdine On Saturday


LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 9 Long Beach State (7-5) looks to bounce back after a 1-3 weekend at the MPSF Invite hosting the Air Force Falcons on Friday night.
 
This past weekend, the Beach nearly upset No. 3 USC on the MPSF Invite after heading into overtime and losing 13-12. Prior to facing the Trojans, Long Beach State faced No. 2 Stanford for the second time in a row and ended defeated 14-10. The win of the weekend came on a Big West clash against No. 12 UC Davis by 12-10. In the last game of the tournament, the Beach dropped the contest against No. 7 Princeton with the score of 14-12.
 
Senior Evan Cain had a great weekend leading the Beach with 12 goals on the four games. Cain scored four goals against the Trojans and had two hat-tricks against the Cardinals and the Aggies. Senior Bruno Chiappini scored nine goals on the weekend. Against No. 12 UC Davis, Chiappini led the team with five goals in the game. Freshman duo Gabi Acosta and Corbin Stanley keep making an impact on the Beach offense as both recorded hat-tricks on the overtime loss against No. 3 USC. Sophomore Marc Frigola continues to help the team on offense notching nine assists on the weekend.
 
In defense, Seniors Liam Ward and Aaron Wilson continued to split time in the cage during the tournament. Ward had a season-high of 12 saves against the Trojans while Wilson recorded 15 saves on the weekend and two assists.
 
Long Beach State's next opponent, Air Force (8-6), comes off of a busy weekend hosting the Rare Air Challenge. The Falcons went 4-2 on the weekend recording wins against Biola, Cal Lutheran, Augustana College and Iona. They dropped two close contests, heading into sudden death with No. 17 Navy and nearly upsetting No. 14 Harvard. Leading the Falcons offense is Sophomore Tom Leggett who has 63 goals so far in the season, which 31 were scored over the weekend. Live stats for the match can be followed on thefosh.net.
 
After hosting the Air Force, the Beach will face No. 4 Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif. on Saturday at Noon. The Waves come from an undefeated weekend at the WCC-Big West Challenge after defeating No. 20 California Baptist, No. 13 UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Fullerton. Christian Hosea leads the Waves in offense with 32 goals scored so far in the season. The contest will be live streamed on ESPN+ and stats can be followed on thefosh.net.
