National State Championships set to star on Queensland’s Gold Coast

A performance competition for state representative teams, the National State Championships (NSC) will see the best young players in Australia go head to head for the coveted National Titles.

Supported by Experience Gold Coast, hundreds of athletes and families travel to Queensland for the five-day event.

“What a coup to score these National Championships for the coast,’’ said Acting Mayor Donna Gates.

“This event is the breeding ground for our future national reps in the Sharks and Stingers’ squads. Anyone who watched the Stingers in that gold medal match in Paris will know Aussie water polo is on the rise as a national sport.

“As a city, we have the facilities to attract the best young talent and I’m pleased to see both GC Aquatic Centre and Miami Aquatic Centre hosting the nationals. Good luck to all competitors, officials and sponsors,” she said.

Before the much-anticipated event begins tomorrow, we’ve got you covered with eight things you need to know about the NSC.

Who is playing?

Competing in their relevant state teams, the NSC will feature the best 15&U and 17&U Female and Male players from around Australia. The 2024 event will also feature a team from New Zealand in each category, with our neighbours from across the ditch making the trip to be part of the development event.

When will the competition take place?

The competition will take place from Thursday 26 - Monday 30 September 2024.

Teams will take part in a round-robin style competition over the first four days, before the top ranked teams will go head to head in semi finals on Sunday afternoon. Medal matches and classification matches will take place on Monday 30 September.

Where will the event take place?

The NSC will take place on the Gold Coast across two pools. The Girls teams in both 15&U and 17&U will play at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre while the Boys teams will all play at the Miami Aquatic Centre.

Why is this event important?

The event provides a platform for aspiring athletes to compete against the best players in Australia. Additionally, the championships offer the opportunity for National Age Group selectors to observe athletes and make squad selections. Squads will be announced in the weeks following the NSC.
