Van den Bree is happy after winning the KNZB Supercup; ‘’I am proud of the motivated and dedicated women’’

In the Amersfoort Amerena, the women of ZV De Zaan won the Supercup last night with a 19-16 victory over Polar Bears. Last year, the prize went to the women from Ede. Lieke Rogge was important for achieving the third Supercup victory in Zaan history with eight goals.

The team of coach Mick van den Bree pulled the victory towards them in the last period. He is happy with the victory and sees a difference with last year’s Supercup.

''We went into the match as if it were the cup final. Compared to last year, we have made great strides, although we have to close matches even earlier. The teams were now fairly evenly matched, which made it a fun Supercup for everyone. I am happy with the win and the number of goals scored, our ‘open house’ at the back is an important point of attention. We played with a lot of energy and were able to press more after Iris Wolves was sent off. She is one of the best Dutch midfielders and that does something to the players in the water.’’

The Supercup, led by Ruben Sap and Rik Evers, started excellently for the Zaandam players with an early goal by Lieke Rogge. The returning Fleurien Bosveld played a strong match with good interceptions and attacking actions. The period scores were in De Zaan’s favour; 4-2, 8-6, 14-13 and 19-16.

In the second period, Van den Bree’s team extended their lead from 4-2 to 7-3. After a time-out by Polar Bears, a good comeback by the Berinnen followed, with the highlight being the no-look pass by Renée de Kleer, which resulted in the 8-7. In the equally matched third period, the teams scored alternately. Until 11-9 after which three Polar Bears goals followed and they took the lead for the first time halfway through the third period. Captain Iris Wolves received a red card with substitution at 13-12 after she applauded the referees after a regular exclusion. It changed the dynamics of the match. In the last period, De Zaan managed to maintain a three-goal lead and thus achieved the victory.

Zaan player Nerida Drewes won the swim-off twice and scored three times, including the important 3-2. ''It was a crazy match but it is a nice start to the season. We have won a full prize, I am very happy with that. It was a messy match that shows that there is still plenty of work to be done in our mutual communication and on defense.''

According to Storm Willemsen, who scored five times, it was a nice but difficult match. ''It was a good match to start with, the Supercup is a match in itself. We were able to see where we stand. Offensively we were pretty good but we dropped stitches in defense. Given the course of the match, the exclusion of Iris and the girls playing at the WJK under 18, it became difficult for us. In any case, it is good to have started again.’’
