Concentrated De Zaan men win KNZB Supercup; ''We played according to plan and grew in the match''

After winning the national championship, the men from Zaan won the Supercup last night at the expense of GZC Donk. After the Zaandam players took the lead after almost three minutes, they did not relinquish the match. The match ended in the Amersfoort Amerena in 11-16 after the previous period scores of 2-4, 5-9 and 7-12.

Partly due to an old suspension of the returning Guus van Ijperen and the absence of Quint and Stan van de heuvel, among others, Donk played with a number of youth players. Yuri Szeles made his debut as Donk coach in the match that was led by Michiel Zwart and Peter de Jong.

Zaan coach Andreas Mirales speaks of a deserved victory. ''We played the match in a businesslike manner and we did not get into trouble. This is an excellent start to the season.’’

Zaandammer Angelo Corver scored twice in the first four minutes for the best water polo team of last season, where youth international Pim Steenbrink was in goal. De Zaan then started the second period with a bang after the swim-off win by Don Rempt and the 5 meters made by Schouwerwou. Mirales saw that both teams had to get used to playing again.

''It was a matter of feeling each other out during the first match of the season. We had a good preparation behind us, although the intensity of a match is different. We played according to plan and grew into the match. We built up well in the first two periods and then really struck in the third and fourth periods.’’

In the first two periods, the teams were evenly matched until 4-5. De Zaan then opened up a gap to 5-9 and increased the goal difference to five in the following period, partly due to a goal by Don Rempt in the final seconds of the third period.

While Donk was still pushing, it saw its opponent secure the victory in the last quarter. Thijs Schouwerwou speaks of an instructive match.

''It was nice to be back in the water, especially when it matters right away. Our start wasn't even that bad and we're still coming back well. After they opened up a gap of several goals, we knew it would be harder to catch up. We had too many exclusions, they scored at the right moments and you could see our energy drain away. There is still a lot of work to be done and that is a nice challenge for the coming period. Ultimately, it was an instructive evening for us in a match in which we played with several new players.''

Mirales thought his team played well, although he sees that the players still lack automatisms. ‘’We have seen enough good game situations that we can build on. In this early phase of the season, you can’t be dissatisfied after a win. However, there is still plenty of room for improvement. We will grow with each match and in doing so, the automatisms and patterns will be further refined. I am looking forward to the upcoming matches.’’
