CHENGDU | Spain beats Hungary (10-7) and seals its place in the World Cup final
Our grassroots water polo is making history again and Spain would be in another great international final. The national junior women's team has defeated Hungary (10-7) in the semi-finals of the Junior World Championships in Chengdu (China) and will fight for gold this Sunday against Greece at 9:00 Spanish peninsular time.
We had a very high-profile semi-final in Chengdu between Spain and Hungary. Two of the strongest teams in this World Cup faced each other for a place in the final. In the first period, it was the Hungarians who took the lead. always ahead and Spain was the one that tied the game and was further behind. Hungary was 2-3 up at the end of the first eight minutes.
In the second half, Queralt Antón tied the game and Itziar Almeda scored for the first time ahead of our team (4-3). They opened the gap early on, but the Hungarians recovered before the long break and equalised (5-5). A great match at the halfway point.
HUGE THIRD QUARTER
After the restart, Spain came out spectacularly in the pool on Chinese soil and linked a partial of 3-0 (two from Almeda and one from Antón) to go 8-5 up. Hajdu scored the 8-6 with only eight minutes left. They had to finish the job.
And Spain has been very solid and forceful at the back to confirm their advantage on the scoreboard. Defending wonderfully and getting the 9-6 thanks to a great Itziar Almeda (top scorer with four goals). In the end, 10-7 and once again making history.
