The Mayor of Badalona presents the project for the complex with a 50-meter pool to RFEN and FCN
The Mayor of Badalona, Xavier Garcia Albiol, met last Monday with the president of the Royal Spanish Swimming Federation (RFEN Aquatics), Fernando Carpena, and the president of the Catalan Swimming Federation (FCN), Ramon Bosch, to present the project for the sports complex with a 50-metre swimming pool to be built on the site of the former FOCUS factory, on the land between MolĂ de la Torre and Jaume Passarell streets and the C-31 motorway. This new complex will include an Olympic-sized swimming pool (50 metres), another support pool, stands and a gym to serve the citizens of Badalona.
After the meeting, the president of RFEN Aquatics, Fernando Carpena, was very satisfied with the content of the project and offered the Federation's full support to the City Council so that the new pool can host national and international competitions. "This is a very ambitious proposal that will give a big boost to water sports in the city, but also in Catalonia and its surroundings," Carpena said.
The mayor of Badalona, Xavier Garcia Albiol, explained that the project, which has been worked on jointly with the Badalona Swimming Club and the Catalan Swimming Federation, is in the final phase of drafting the Functional Plan. It is expected that it will be finished in the next few weeks and that a new meeting with the federations will be held in the autumn to present the final project before putting the construction project out to tender.
"Our commitment was to build a new 50-metre pool and we will do so, since it was a necessity for the city, due to the anomaly that the third city in Catalonia does not have the pools it requires for its number of inhabitants. With this project we want to provide the service that the residents deserve, but we are also seeking the support of the federations so that the new complex can be a benchmark and host national and international swimming and water polo competitions," Garcia Albiol said.
