U.S. Women's Youth National Team Upends Australia 16-12 In China
Chengdu, China - September 17 - The U.S. Women's Youth National Team upended Australia 16-12 earlier today at the 2024 World Aquatics U18 Water Polo Championships. Allison Cohen poured in seven goals and Rosalie Hassett scored thrice as goalkeeper Keri Glad made ten saves in the cage. A replay of the game can be accessed here. Team USA came out strong with a 2-0 lead established by Charlotte Raisin and Sydney Lowell before Australia leveled through Saskia Dunn and Bless Daly. Raisin drilled one from the top and Cohen began her big scoring day from the top left for a 4-2 edge by the first break. In the second, Sienna Owen converted for 4-3 and then Cohen scored the next three United States goals with Christina Digiandomenico ending the run for the Aussies. Cohen converted two penalty goals before the game reached halftime at 7-4 in favor of the Americans.
Lily Palma found the back of the net for Team USA to start the third period before Aussie captain Chelsea Isaac replied after two quick passes. Daly had a penalty attempt saved, but she jumped on the rebound and sent it in for 8-6. Cohen and Dunn swapped goals before an Aussie timeout, but they could not contain Cohen who bounced in her sixth goal for a 10-7 lead. Hassett and Dunn traded goals before Cohen registered her seventh score of the day. Lowell and Hassett pushed the lead to 14-8 before the final break. Katherine O'Dea converted to start the final frame for the United States. From there, the Australians managed three goals — two from Isaac and another from Dunn — until Hassett converted a player advantage with 1:44 remaining for a five-goal cushion. The Americans would hold on after that, securing the 16-12 win.
Team USA went 4/10 on power plays and 4/4 on penalties while Australia went 4/9 on power plays and 3/4 on penalties.
