Mercyhurst University Takes Down the University of Toronto, 10-9; Falls Versus Division III No. 9 Johns Hopkins University, 16-7, Salem University, 17-6, & Mount St. Mary’s University, 17-10, at Salem Invitational

CASSVILLE, W.Va. — Mercyhurst University finished 1-3 at the 2024 Salem Invitational hosted by Salem University at The Peak Health Aquatic Center at Mylan Park. The Lakers topped the University of Toronto, 10-9, and dropped contests against Division III No. 9 Johns Hopkins University, 16-7, Mount St. Mary’s University, 17-10, and the host Tigers, 17-6, in moving to 1-6 on the season.

Against Johns Hopkins on September 14, junior Owen Hardner led the Lakers with two goals.  A five-goal second quarter by the Blue Jays proved the difference in the contest. Andrew Lee had a hat trick for John Hopkins.

In their second game of the weekend, the Lakers grabbed their first Division I win ever over the University of Toronto. Freshman Petar Vujovic scored four goals in the match that came down to the wire.

The Lakers started out Sunday, September 15 with a match against host Salem. Although the Lakers outshot the Tigers by a 39-to-38 margin, the Tigers were able to make the most of their opportunities in an 11-goal victory. Junior Marko Zivojinovic, freshman Ivan Petkovski and freshman Danko Kesic eached scored four goals for Salem. Vujovic led the Lakers with a pair of goals in the losing effort.

Mercyhurst finished the weekend with a Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) match against Mount St. Mary’s. Asher Jones put up a weekend high five goals in the match, but the Mountaineers pulled out a seven-score win. Mount St. Mary’s had ten different players score in their win.
