Thomas Lucas and Marloes Nijhuis swim across the IJsselmeer
Ex-internationals Thomas Lucas and Marloes Nijhuis are training fully and with great pleasure for the IJsselmeer crossing. They swim forBorneBeweegt.
Thomas and Marloes explain: “Fun, self-confidence, social contacts and a boost for your mental and physical health. That is the power of sport and we wish that for every person! That is why we take up the challenge to raise money for vulnerable young people in the municipality of Borne. 21 kilometers, about eight hours of front crawl swimming across the IJsselmeer, from Medemblik to Stavoren. A challenge that is not feasible for everyone, but sports and exercise at any level or in any way is. And that is what we are committed to!"
Charity
BorneBeweegt, the charity they swim for , has a special place in Marloes' heart. “It is the place where my brother (in the middle of the photo, ed.) was able to take many great steps, partly through the power of sport.” The money raised will be used for vulnerable young people between the ages of 16 and 27 who get stuck in daily life due to various (mental and/or behavioral) problems. For these young people, sport and exercise are not self-evident, but who knows what the power of sport is can also mean for them!
Marloes did a lot of open water swimming at a young age. During her time with the Dutch women's team, this hobby came to a standstill, but shortly after it ended She started her top sports career again with enthusiasm in 2019. That summer, she swam with Maarten van der Weijden in his Elfstedentocht. But swimming across the IJsselmeer has always been one of her dreams Then it would be great fun to do this with a friend. When I suggested this to Thomas in February, his first reaction was: "Are you crazy? I'm really not going to do that!" But a few days later he called me back.” Thomas: “For such a great cause, of course, I'm going for it!”
